After its debut in the 2016 Civic, where it’s an upgrade over the base 158-hp, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the 1.5-liter spread to the ludicrously popular CR-V crossover as an upgrade over the standard 184-hp, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four. In the Civic it’s rated at 174 horsepower—except in the supertasty Si, where it spins out 205 ponies. In the CR-V, it lights off at 190 horsepower.
Even if you don’t want the extra cost of winter tyres, checking the tread depth of your existing tyres is important. The legal limit is 1.6mm, but having more than this can dramatically improve steering and braking - if your tyres are due replacing, then winter is a good time to do it. Also check your tyre pressures regularly, as these can change with the drop in air temperature with the changing of the seasons.
Check and clean your lights regularly. The salt and dirt can quickly build-up, reducing the effectiveness of the lights and reducing your visibility to other road users. It's best to keep your lights on in all sorts of weather, as it helps you to be seen. Carry extra bulbs in case of a failure, but do try and learn how to replace the bulbs when it's convenient, because you can guarantee that when one blows it'll be in the dark, in freezing cold and possibly wet weather, which isn't an ideal time to learn about your car.

The two M Sport models both sit on 19in alloy wheels and include unique bumpers and paintwork, as well as heated front seats. The M Sport and M Sport X are inspired by circuit racing and rallying respectively. Both trims receive stiffer M Sport suspension and have a lowered ride height.

The Accord’s 192-hp version is at least nominally close to the CR-V unit, with its 10.3:1 compression ratio, direct fuel injection, and VTEC variable valve-timing system. All variants use essentially the same hardware, including the Mitsubishi TD03 single-scroll turbocharger. What varies is the software, boost levels, and, in the case of the Civic Si, a preference for premium fuel.
"If any car deserves to be in a museum, it's this one," Blackwell says, "for the miles it's gone and the things it's done for me."
