Until a relatively short time ago, Faraday Future was principally funded by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting, whose main business is the internet and telecom giant LeEco. Yueting's businesses kept Faraday afloat up until this spring, when unpaid loan payments forced a court in China to freeze some $182 million in assets. As this source of cash dried up, Faraday Future embarked on a cash-raising campaign this spring, seeking to attract new investors mostly by publishing videos of the FF91 prototype. The startup was also forced to drop plans for a $1 billion factory just outside of Las Vegas and sought out a smaller existing facility in California with some effort. The halt of LeEco funding has also forced Faraday to place its Formula E team into hibernation, and to whittle down a planned lineup of seven electric models to just two.
So we’re going to be running this for the next few months to see if it can live up to those bold economy claims (unlikely, we know, but it’ll be interesting to see what we can actually get from it in everyday use) and, of course, to see how it stacks up as a used proposition. Is it too early to say our Outlander will live up to those impressive economy figures? The Ferrari (chassis number 1451 GT) was originally built to compete in the 1959 Le Mans 24-hour and had been off the production line for no more than 5 days, before it was tearing up the tarmac at the world’s oldest endurance race.
"It was just elementary," Miller said of the many accounting and finance controls he helped implement through the years. "It was like shooting fish in a barrel."
"I don't think you can physically do two programs. It would be complicated. Doing Le Mans or Indianapolis or Daytona, why not; it's a one-off. But more than this it is definitely a distraction from his main commitment."
You do get a lot of kit for that money, mind you, including a range of safety and convenience features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and a collision-mitigation system. The exterior has plenty of colour-keyed elements to please the eye, including bumpers, mirrors and door handles, and the interior is swathed in nappa leather.
Power and torque from the Triton V10 were good for 0-60 in 22.4 on the first launch and 19.0 seconds on the second, both measured with the Racelogic timer. Not reassuring but about par for the category. I drove the rig up to about 6,000 feet in the Sierras; then, as the road got narrower and maybe the power got less, I pulled over and enjoyed the view from there.
