So, “WRC 7” has all of the cars, all of the teams and ALL of the tracks from the current rally season. I started out with the big cars before quickly realizing that they had a little too much power for a rallying rookie; in-house rally driver Jimmy had a bit more luck early on. But with the hyperrealistic brand-spanking-new Thrustmaster Ts-Xw Racer Sparco P310 wheel controller setup -- thanks guys, we love it -- I could feel every errant rock at the edge of the road, every tree stump and every freewheeling jump the Ford Junior WRC car could throw at me. Front-wheel drive: It’s where the losers start.
So “Dirt 4” may be a little easier to pick up and play, but “WRC 7” is probably more rewarding in the long run. And running those real tracks, with real drivers and real weather is pretty damn cool. I don’t think it has the same graphic fidelity or smoothness as a “Project Cars 2” or a “Forza” -- though the lighting effects are awesome -- but if you’re into rally, it’s every bit as fun.
“Inside, I think the infotainment screen stands out – it looks fantastic and is feature packed. But aside from that, there also seems to be good amounts of space for this type of car – particularly legroom and boot space. I like the low loading lip for getting items in the back, too.”
The project is still on track despite the advanced age of the 9-3 and the underlying tech, and the country's five major suppliers and tech giants have just signed on to produce the still-unnamed national car. Back to that Thrustmaster wheel: It has an insane amount of force feedback (or lack thereof, like when you’re flying through the air). It also jiggles at idle, which sort of feels like a motor rocking the car back and forth. Like all of these games, “Forza 7” included, the amount of feedback and environmental effects can be adjusted in the menu screen. The suede-covered wheel reacts to the track and the in-game car reacts almost perfectly to the wheel. I found the Scandanavian Flick to be a little harder than in real life. You can really use left-foot braking to load up the suspension and somewhat realistically swing the car around. Keep the gas pinned(-ish) and dab the brakes as needed.
