He credits its handling with saving his life one dark night when a bumper fell off a semi, forcing him to swerve into an interstate median, blowing out two tires in the process. "Had to obviously get the tires replaced and the car towed in that night. But any other car, there was no way in the world that I would not have hit that bumper."

That’s why we asked owners of 14,208 cars to tell us if their cars had suffered any faults in the past 12 months. Faults were classified into 14 groups: battery, bodywork, brakes, engine, engine electrics, exhaust, exterior lights, fuel system, gearbox/clutch, interior trim, non-engine electrics, steering, suspension and other.
“Inside, I think the infotainment screen stands out – it looks fantastic and is feature packed. But aside from that, there also seems to be good amounts of space for this type of car – particularly legroom and boot space. I like the low loading lip for getting items in the back, too.”
Four-wheel drive will be offered on some models. While a six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, an automatic option will be available.
The new generation design language employed on the QX50 means up front a large grille with an oversized badge is flanked by narrow headlights with LED lighting signatures. A muscular looking front bumper with large air intakes appears to sit underneath it.
Removed from its natural habitat and heading down a demanding country road, it’s less supreme. With vague steering and relatively soft suspension, the Cavalier feels unwieldy and often gets pitched off line by mid-corner lumps and bumps. It’s easy to see why, in 1995, Ford regained the upper hand – and its pride – with the Sierra’s ground-up replacement: the sharp-handling Mondeo.
