The game does a great job of making the player feel claustrophobic, both because of the in-car camera and the narrow trails with sheetmetal-shredding obstacles on each side. Like “Dirt,” you’ll have to get proficient at listening to the navigator call out instructions at speed, but it’s not as hard as you might think. The directions are displayed at the top of the screen, and once you hear “left 3” you’ll be waiting for it. Once it’s passed, it disappears, replaced by the next bit of info.
It’s easier to drive with your thumbs tucked in, but you will have to use the handbrake, which is a stretch when also navigating the regular brakes, gas and turning inputs. I don’t know if there’s a better way, except maybe a Ken Block-style stick jutting off the side of the pedals. "Before we left, Henry said, 'I want to hire all of you. Just put your name down and how much money you want," Miller recalled in 2003.
Thankfully, the rest of the interior is far more commendable. Soft-touch plastics cover the entirety of the dash and, despite the interior looking a tad bland in its monochrome colour scheme, this being a later top-of-the-range V6 CDX model, there's at least plenty of kit to keep you entertained: air conditioning, heated seats, an electric sunroof and a fancy Blaupunkt CD player.
Drivers can almost create their own ABS in a car that doesn’t have it fitted by using the cadence method mentioned above. If you find yourself travelling too quickly in wet or slippery conditions and try to stop suddenly, the wheels are likely to lock up and the car could start to skid.
